Light Up the World: Simple Ways to Make a Difference
Share
In Matthew 5:14-16, Jesus says, "You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
Jesus is telling us that we are called to be light in the world. We are not only light receivers, but light givers. We are called to shine our light brightly so that others may see our good deeds and glorify God.
How can we be light in the world?
Here are a few ways:
- Be kind and compassionate to others.
- Be forgiving.
- Be helpful and generous.
- Be honest and truthful.
- Be a good listener.
- Be an encourager.
- Be a role model for others.
- Share your faith with others.
Why is it important to be light in the world?
The world is a dark place. There is a lot of pain, suffering, and injustice. But when we are light in the world, we can help to dispel the darkness. We can bring hope, healing, and love to others.
We can also help to change the world one life at a time. When we are kind, compassionate, and forgiving, we are touching the lives of others in a positive way. We are making the world a better place.
Don't hide your light
Don't be afraid to let your light shine brightly. Don't hide it under a basket. Put it on a lampstand so that it can give light to all who are in the house.
The world needs your light.
Here are a few examples of how you can be light in the world:
- Volunteer at a local soup kitchen or homeless shelter.
- Donate to a charity that supports a cause you care about.
- Mentor a young person.
- Visit someone who is sick or lonely.
- Simply be a good friend, neighbor, and coworker.
Every small act of kindness can make a difference. So let your light shine brightly and change the world one life at a time.
Showing the Way, Not Pointing and Judging
When Jesus says to be the light of the world, he is not telling us to point our fingers at others and judge them. He is telling us to show the way by living our lives in a way that reflects the love and grace of God.
A lamp shows the way by shining its light in a dark room. It doesn't need to point at anything or say anything. It simply shines its light, and people can see where they are going.
A torch, on the other hand, is used to point at things. It can be used to point out the mistakes of others or to judge them. But a torch is not very helpful if you are trying to find your way in a dark room.
When we are light in the world, we are like lamps. We show the way by living our lives in a way that reflects the love and grace of God. We are kind, compassionate, and forgiving. We are honest and truthful. We are helpful and generous.
We don't need to point at others and judge them. We simply need to shine our light, and people will see where they are going.
